Make sure that your Motherboard, CPU, and RAM all work together. Usually when you make such a dramatic upgrade, you need to take all three of these to the next level.

The P4 and AMD use Socket 423 and Socket 478.
The P2, Socket 370.

So, no, it won't work out for you. You must replace the motherboard.

Usually when you buy a motherboard, it will specify the processors it is suitable for. Certain sites like mwave.com will let you price out MoBo/CPU/RAM bundles.
I really want to drive home the fact that you are probably going to need new RAM too, as newer motherboards usually only support DDRRAM and better.

AAA Motoma you mentioned Mwave you are awesome!!! I have been doing business with Mwave since 2000 they are so great, I know all the stuff and drive over to their headquarters at least 1 a month to pick up hardware and software.

I recommend them very much if you live in the States.
