I have always wondered, like on big work or school networks, how they are able to make a central logon system. What I mean is, how you are able to logon to any account on any computer. To make one would you need a domain and Windows Server (the OS)? Lol I was just wondering because that really bugged me.
A large school network such as your speaking of is hosted off a server indeed what OS depends on the administrator that set the network up. Normally for such big networks most use win2003 for larger more advanced users are normally using some sort of a UNIX or Linux version for a server.
Let’s say we have computer "X" as server and we have 255 computers as "Y"
Now lets take a name lets say your name is "John D." a administrator of the network will go to the computer "X" being the "SERVER" and add a user by the name of "Johnd" for a login that server is connected to all "Y" computers so there for when you go to lets say computer 123 "Y" and login using the name "Johnd" it will check with "X" (THE SERVER) and if its TRUE then you will get what ever access is granted to you. That is also set up VIA the server as well.
Hope this helps you with a wider understanding.
