The Error Message:
If you have NTFS installed on your hard drive,
you need to create a MS DOS boot partition for windows.
Also, the icon that says HD does not even come up.
The diagnostic test have said:
Hard Drive NONE found.
All NTFS MS DOS programs we've tried, have not worked. So, as a work around, we were wondering if the following would work:

Can one hook up an external hard drive to it, toss on XP (onto external HD), and use the CD-rom on the laptop and have it connect with the external HD?
Thanks!

Here is something that I think is very cool that has worked well for me:
Use this link for tips on creating a bootable CD. Using a Windows install CD, Bart's PE creates a boot CD that gives you full access to the machine including network and devices.
I hope this works well for you too.

It didn't work because the Hard Drive, we've determined is completely toast. Not working at all. Friend did everything that site said, and made 2 emergency boot disc, just like the site said, and it didn't work. So, we are stuck with plan B. Seeing about getting a cheap Hard drive, as he found installing one in his laptop is really easy.

Yep. That's a better way to go. Bootable CD doesn't cost anything (why I mentioned it).
