Make sure the Master, Slave, CS are in the right position. You want the pin to be in Master.
Listen to any noise it makes, if it sounds strange while booting chances are its broken.
Cyber.
Do laptops have Master Slave and Cable select on their drives? Sounds like it's knackered tbh, If you can get an extension cable and boot with the drive outside the computer you can listen, if it clicks repeatidly it's dying. Honestly, if it's clicking, give it a relatively hard knock on a hard surface, sometimes the heads get stuck in a rut on the drives surface, this can knock it out. If that works, back up everything you need off the drive, as it will most likely always be troublesome.
