Restricted Broadband Internet Access

Hey Guyz....

Have recently had to change Phone companies (old one stopped trading) in the UK and was given an advanced date (1st February) and two weeks warning. The old company had a small Box between the Phone line and my system (to detect calls) and to be safe I remove this early on the 31st January (before I reverted back to my old Phone company) to make sure everything worked okay....it did. On the stroke of Midnight I checked my system just to make sure everything was okay - both my phones were fine and the Internet was still okay, or so I thought.... My 1MB Broadband was still indicating it worked okay and my Upload speed remained at 256KB, but my download dropped to 65kB from 1150KB!!. After numerous system checks and Phone calls to my Phone company (BT) who also own the Phone Lines, and my Internet Provider, who apparently needed to inform the Phone company of the changeover, I am still (8 days later) on 65kB Download speed!! No-one wants to take responsibility for this and each of the above company claims there is nothing wrong with my system, when there clearly IS!! My question:- Who is actually responsible for this - Phone company or Internet Provider, or could there be another alternative cause of the problem? Outside intervention of some kind... I am a heavy Internet User and this is really starting to get me down - Can anyone shed light on my predicament?

Hi Mark. This sounds more like one of your service providers that a Windows issue. There are several regular contributors from the UK who may check the Techie Talk Forum more often the they do here. Perhaps you'll want to give that forum a shot.

Unplug and plug back in your modem and router (if you have one) Usually slow download speeds are due to faulty hardware, try plugging the modem directly into the Ethernet card of your pc and restart. If all fails call the company again and tell them to do a line check, they can tell if the line is strong or not from the office by running a series of tests.

if you want to see what your downloa and upload speeds are as well as compare it to other users in your area you can go to DSL Reports

Best luck, Cyber
