Use Control Panel: Task Bar and Start Menu: Start Menu tab: Customize... button: check "Display Run". It works on Classic Start Menu, so it should work if you using stock XP Start Menu.

Yap that'll do...
right click start button, click properties, if start menu is selected, click customize then advance tab. In start menu item, check on run command.
and for classic start menu, customize, in advance start menu option, check on display run.
enjoy! L][nk

Thanks, link for the added info.
thanks for your support. I tried both options but the "display run" does not appear in the list.
Sounds strange.

I had to look 3 times before I saw it. You may want to tripple check.
The directions above are correct but you might consider a simpler solution...
Stone, on your keyboard press and hold the Windows key (in between Ctrl and Alt on your left) or (in between Alt and Option on the right) and press R
so Windows + R will bring up run =)
Good Luck.

you're welcome bartonc...
yap I forgot about that also... :D
if you still can't display or show your the run command...try to search your registry and find norun, change the value to 0.
btw, you can find the regedit.exe in windows folder.
cheers!

Thanks Cyberdyne .
Still no result . A message is displayed "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." when I press Windows button and R.
And also the regedit option is also not working. It displays the system administrator message again. What can I do to change the settings ?

Be logged in as a sys admin. or get whoever is sys admin to give you access to Run.
Yea Barton is right, you have system policies enabled on your network, and only the network admins can give you access to RUN and other features. An alternative would be to log on to the system under local profile but then you would be off your domain in a sense.
Best Luck, Cyberdyne.

is this your personal computer or at work? they have purpose in disabling the run command. try ask for an assistance before trying to enable the run command, your company might have an administrator or MIS try to ask them first.
If this is a personal computer ask the person installed your Windows to enable the Run command.
hope this helps. enjoy :)

Yes its my personal computer and u r right i'll have to contact the person who installed the windows.

So the guy set your username to be limited well, call him and ask him for admin password, login with that info and make your account administrative from start menu go to control panel and then to users, select your username and make it administrative
Good Luck! (P.S. if you are using XP Home you will have to do this in safe mode unless there is another admin username that you can use)
Cyber.
hi,
I had the same problem as you have described, it started when I clicked on a link appearing in the yahoo messenger window of a friend, actually, the link had appeared there because his computer might have been infected with the virus. No sooner did I click the link, my PC was also infected and lot of IE windows started popping up, I cleaned the virus using AVG and also the spyware with Norton Anti spy (downloaded with yahoo toolbar). It had disabled regedit also. Which was enabled by using a toggle regedit tool.A few more tweaks were needed in the registry to set my browser right and prevent redirections. Then I realized that, it had gobbled up my run command as well and all the symptoms as u have mentioned,Finally here is how I made it allright:-
go to C:\windows\system32 and click on gpedit.msc, this will open the group policy editor. Now, drill down to User Configuration-->Administrative templates-->Start Menu and Taskbar.
Find "Remove run from start menu".This would be displayed as "Not Configured". display the properties by right clicking it.Disable it once and then make it Not Configured again. Now you should find run in start menu.
can't live without run! ;-)
hope it helps..
Manoj
