I bought a laptop with Win MCE 2005, but the splash screen on the demo laptop at the store said it had Win XP Pro. I have to have the full networking security features of Win XP Pro in order to use my laptop at the office on the WAN, according to IT. The salesperson said Media Center Edition was Win XP Pro with an additional software feature (the media center).
However, now I see that WinXP MCE doesn't have a domain controller, so I don't think they'll let me hook it to the network. What can I do to make my WinXP MCE truly like WinXP Pro for domain control?

My MCE machine is only a couple of days old and I haven't had much chance to play with it yet. I did get in and see that Group Policy Object Editor is available. I don't know if that's different the Group Policy Editor on my XP pro. This may be a good starting point for you. Keep us informed as this pertains to many on this forum besides me. Thanks for posting,
Barton
nukexxx I have several people at my office with media center laptops asking me the same question and the answer is simple you can't use media center to hook up to a domain, so your best bet is to upgrade to xp pro. There is an alternative however for this, you can connect to your terminal server if you have one at work and work using remote dectop connection. At the very least the guys at your work should let you have access to the internet through secured wireless of lan connection and you should be able to check your corporate e-mail through your browser and have access to some printers.
Good Luck.
I would wait till vista comes out later this month and get that instead of xp pro, you will need the business or ultimate edition of vista if you want to join your work network.

Media Center Edition does seem to have some Pro-like features, however:
I've recently been doing some probing and found that the Group Policy Editor does have a full compliment of settings on Media Center Edition.
