CD/DVD Combo drive

I am at my wits end with my acer aspire 1700.

The cd/dvd drive failed a few weeks ago [motor]. I bought a new one [in fact two turned up [Quanta SBW-242].

I have installed one and the laptop finds new hardware but has no idea what it is. A ? mark appears followed by 12 square boxes as a description. I have disabled it and tried again and I get the same results with the other new unit I have.

Has anyone any ideas?

Manually install the driver. You can usually download it from the manufacturer's website, or if you got a disk with it...

This particular CD/DVD users Microsoft drivers. The manufacturers web site just says it will automatically install under XP.

The problem of course is that it doesn't want to recognise it. Cheers for the reply though.

Are you logged on as an Administrator account when you fire it up? Perhaps you don't have the authority to set up the driver.

did you really checked the Hardware Compatibility List HCL from MS...

because you don't buy a PC with windows, you buy a windows and then a PC... it looks like that anyway... :)

I am the administrator on the laptop and the brand of cd/dvd rom drive is on the recognised list. It is the one that was supplied with the laptop when it was new and the replacment I have bought is identical [I have two and neither are recognised]

Really appreciated all this help as this one has me stumped.

Possibly something was damaged - during installation perhaps. Bent pin? Dirt in socket? Etc.

It's been almost a month - I'd be curious to know how it turned out.

I would run a manual install of the drive and chose the generic one for that particular brand. Were you able to fix the problem? Also sometime windows update under custom updates will get you your driver try those options.

Good Luck.

I don't think Chatenet is coming back to read this thread - last activity was a month ago.
