Declaring variables in VB

While debugging my program of VB i came to know wherever i had written a statement like
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. Dim k, j as Integer
. The variable which was defined immediately before as was only having that data types value and rest shows empty ......
for eg, in my above statement only j integger as data type when debugged; where as k was showing it as variant(used when undefined.) and inside it was showing empty information instead of 0.
Can somebody explain it?

many older versions of VB will read this:

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. Dim a, b, c as Integer
as

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. Dim a
  2. Dim b
  3. Dim c as integer
So a and b will be empty variants when declared.

Newer versions (like 2005) will make them all integers.

If you want to make sure you have the correct types, you can always use commas this way:

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. Dim a as integer, b as integer, c as integer, d as long
