Access 2000 Forms

Hi I'm currently building an access db in MS Access 2000, having not touched acces for about 10 years. I need to conditionally hide / display a combobox (specfically a pop up calendar) depending on the answer to the previous combobox.

I only want the date box to be displayed if the answer to the previous field was 'Pass' currently I have this code:

Private Sub Field1_BeforeUpdate(Cancel As Integer)
 
If Me![Field1] = "Pass" Then
Me![Field2].Visible = True
 
Else
Me![Field2].Visible = False
End If
End Sub

I've also set the visable format option to 'No' this works fine the first time the data is entered but if you look at the form again the field is hidden. I've got a feeling that the anser is simple but I'm still finding my feet in VB.

out of interest, I'm going to be building databases more often now would you guys / gals reccomend a book on Access or a book on VB? or both?
