Learning VB.net

I'm an ME student, trying to write a program to pull data off of a data
acquisition board. I'm making good progress, though completly blind. Its
been several years since I have written ANY code, of any kind, for any
purpose. At the time I used C++ and Java, poorly, but that was about 5
years ago, and this stuff isn't like riding a bike, trust me. I was
wondering if anyone here could recommend some "light" (hehe) reading on
VB.net, to get me up to speed on the terminology, coding conventions etc.
I'ev been digging through Peter Nortons "Visual Basic 6", but being a
different version, and written about 7 years ago, its not terribly relavent.
And I'm not terribly good at this, that doesn't help either. Anyway, any
input would be appreciated, including "Don't waste your money on ...", as I
am a poor as heck grad student, with other things to waste my money on.
Thank you very much for any input you have.

on.

For all practical purposes, VB6 (along with earlier version) and VB.NET
are two completely different languages. Now, for my standard reply....

Almost everybody in this newsgroup is using VB6 or lower. While you may
get a stray answer to VB.NET (including VB2003 and VB2005 which has
dropped .NET from its name) questions here, you should ask them in
newsgroups devoted exclusively to .NET programming. Look for newsgroups
with either the word "dotnet" or "vsnet" in their name.

For the microsoft news server, try these newsgroups for Visual Basic
..NET related questions...

microsoft.public.dotnet.languages.vb
microsoft.public.dotnet.languages.vb.upgrade
microsoft.public.dotnet.languages.vb.controls
microsoft.public.dotnet.languages.vb.data

And these for more general .NET questions

microsoft.public.dotnet.general
microsoft.public.vsnet.general

Note: There are many other .NET newgroups (use the first three "fields"
from the last two as templates when searching for them), but the above
ones should get you started.

Thank you so much for that info, I'll try there. Sorry about posting to the
wrong forum there, my bad.

Just a personal note, I'm using .net because that is what my DAQ driver is
compatible with, not out of any great love of .NET. No need to hate me :)
