Getting Error 429 in XP

I have a program which was developed with VB5Pro under Win98SE.

A Client needs it to run under WinXP. I decided to install VB5 on his machine
so I can make and debug the needed changes in that environment.

WinXP is telling me I don't have the rights to GRID32.OCX which is a standard
VB5 component.

I went to the SYSTEM32 folder and ran REGSVR32 to register the control and even
tried rebooting. The Error 429 persists and I can not use this control.

I don't know if it would make any difference but I have VB6 also. I would
prefer to stay with VB5 if possible.

Does anyone have an idea where the problem is?

No idea, but for what its worth, you can develop VB5 apps with VB6 as long
as you use the VB5 controls, and don't use any VB6-specific syntax. I
routinely did this in a lab app I developed that started and maintained life
as a VB5 app, totally edited in VB6. Naturally you have to use VB5 to
compile it.

This actually sounds more like a permission issue. Are you logged on
as a local administrator when trying to register the component? Have
you tried using any other components taht need to be registered?

David,
That is an issue I hadn't thought of. I will check that out and, if nothing
else works, try installing VB5 under the machine owners name instead of my own.
If I get it fixed I'll post what worked.

Try a couple of things:

Run com explorer. You'd be surprised what files can be missing from your PC.
One time I had scrun missing and that causes all the regsvr to not function
properly (even though it stated that it registers).

I have checked to see that I was logged on as Administrator and I re-installed
VB5 with the name of the computer owner. So far, nothing has helped.

I will look into com explorer next. Thanks.

Found the following in Microsoft Help Files -

SUMMARY
VB5cli.exe installs the Vbcmpfix.exe utility, which fixes problems with the
following three symptoms: NOTE: The former name of VB5Cli.Exe was VBC.EXE. The
file name was changed.

Symptom I
When trying to site a control within your project, you receive the following
error message: License Information For This Component Not Found. You Do Not
Have An Appropriate License To Use This Functionality In The Design Environment.

Symptom II
When trying to compile your project, you receive the following error:
Compile Error : Permission Denied

Symptom III
When trying to run your project, you receive the following error:
Runtime Error '429' : ActiveX Component Can't Create Object

I have downloaded VB5cli.exe and hopefully that will do the job.
