I'm a relative VB6 newbie as well, but I have checked "Beginning
Visual Basic 6 Database Programming" by John Connell (Wrox Press) out
of the library a couple of times and found it very helpful in learning
this stuff. As I remember it focuses on using MS Access Jet engine
rather than SQL Server 7 (which some of the advanced books seem to
focus on).

When this book comes back to my local library I'll be checking it out
yet again.
