How do I...Connecting to a Microsoft JET 4.0 database (.mdb) over a LAN network

2 New Member
I'm building a vb6 application and I need to run it on a LAN network on Windows XP or newer. So far, I've made an algorithm to make and manage databases (Microsoft JET 4.0 databases .mdb) and I can normally use them while on a network using this connection string:

Adodc1.Connecti onString = "Provider=Micro soft.Jet.OLEDB. 4.0;Data Source=\\192.16 8.1.20\SharedFo lder\Data.mdb;P ersist Security Info=False"

But I need to access a database from my application that's for example in a shared folder on another PC over LAN network. And I know that if I try to open a shared folder on Win7 "Computer\Netwo rk\DistantPC\Sh aredFolder" it pops up a window that says "Username" and "Password". So it has password protection which I need to resolve too.

Probably all I need is a good, unique connection string that can access a database like "\\ \SharedFolder\D ata.mdb" without throwing an exception about permission. I can access it like this, but only when I disable passworded sharing on that host PC.

Please help... Thanks !

I believe when it asks for a username/password that is to access the user's PC (and not the database). Unless the DB also has a password. From a security standpoint, I would never want to access an application residing on another user's PC. You should always place it in a shared network location. You can manage user access to the DB via folder permissions, and passwords to the DB, not to mention Custom User Menus for the DB (if it has a compiled Front End). That may be more on the MS Access VBA side than the pure VB side, but may apply to your situation.

Hope this provided a little bit of information and help.

Sorry if this is completely newbie, I haven't used Access in a while as my database. When I do this it works fine, OleDbConnection connection = new OleDbConnection(@"Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;" + @"Data Source=C:\db2.mdb"); But if I move the same access file to my network drive, it gives me an invalid path error.

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For...
