The war of the OSes was won a long time ago. Unix has always been, and will continue to be, the Server OS in the form of Linux. Microsoft struggled mightily to win that battle -- creating a poor man's DBMS, a broken email server and various other /application/ servers to try and crack the Internet and IS markets. In the case where they didn't spend their own money to get companies to

http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/APIWar.html "So you've got the Windows API, you've got VB, and now you've got .NET, in several language flavors, and don't get too attached to any of that, because we're making Avalon, you see, which will only run on the newest Microsoft operating system, which nobody will have for a loooong time. And personally I still haven't had time to learn .NET very deeply, and we haven't ported Fog...

Hi there, I've read in a few places that you should *never* store original passwords in a mySQL DB. Now i wonder if you encrypt it (with MD5 ?), how should i create a lost password function, so the pass could be sent to a corresponding e-mail address? Greetings Frizzle.

I have a Form f with a TextBox tbx. An event handler invokes MyClass.Method1 (form, tbx). Method stores form in a ListArray A1, and {tbx, tbx.Text} (as a structure) in another ListArray A2, both private attributes of MyClass. Later on f invokes MyClass.Method2. Method2 retrieves f from A1and tbx from A2, finds tbx in f.Controls and sets Text in that instantiation to Text in the stored version. In MyClass.Method2 this all seems to be...

- Constant language / system changes - Dropping of the VB language - Security configuation minefields - Loss of old code base - Time consuming to learn (then it changes every 5 minutes) - Slow compiling - Loss of productivity - Relearning (loss of developer time) Lets estimate how much VB.NET has lost companies since its launch in

I have built several very simple setup projects where I just install a single application. I am using the installation tools that come with Visual Studio 2005. This setup I want to build has 2 applications, a windows forms proj and a Windows Service proj (which has a project installer added). So far, I have used the setup designer to add an extra dialog to the Start section of the User interface between "Welcome" and "Installation Folder"....

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
