several more or less viable options exist on CodeProject to turn the
DateTimePicker into a nullable one, able to display a particular
string when the content is null. If a commercial product is an option
for you, you can also consider Smart FieldPackEditor.Net which solves
all the DateTimePicker shortcomings.
