Design Question about long running processes

We are looking at a design that I think has problems. We have a site that
will create scripts to create objects from a store of existing objects. The
user can select the objects wanted and then click to script those objects to
a file. The time to creat this file could be several minutes depending on
the number and complexity of the objects asked for.

Now the "original" idea was to create the file using code running on the
server and once created put a link to the file for download to the users
workstation. The problems are many and most have to do with the timeframe
and the ability to the user to close the browser. Even with AJAX to put up
a status msg (not sure how to do this) the user can still close the browser.

Another thought is to start a process from the page to do the scripting,
then pass a key to the user in order to access the file once created. I
don't see a really elegant solution to this.
