I'm a bit new to visual web using VB (.net 2005). I'm using this in
conjunction with MySQL and am starting to get the hang of things. Here is
the question:
I've been able to do essentially the same thing with different methods, all
of which entail having web pages for multiple users each access the same set
of common values initially stored in a single record in a MySQL table.
1st method) use a set of application variables that are initialized at
application start by retrieving their values from a MySQL table
2nd method) have each page access the variables as needed by accessing the
MySQL table (same table as above) directly without first placing these
values into application variables.
I would think that #1 would be faster and more efficient, as the values
remain in RAM and only have to be taken from the data table once, while #2
would essentially keep the values on disk and require accessing that disk on
multiple occasions. My server is fast enough so that either method produces
instanteous results with only me as a single test user. I have no idea about
the real-world differences between these methods if I had a 100 or so people
all accessing the web pages at once where all 100 are using the same set of
application variables. With the way that modern cache features work,
however, I am wondering whether either method has any real advantage over
the other.
....hope this make sense
Thanks for any insight you might offer
