layout lags and jerks when loading for display when loading data in load event

I am loading a form with about 30 fields on it and with a few listboxes that
could have up to 300 items in each (all of which MUST be displayed), but
when the form loads, you can littearly see it drawing on screen for about
half a second then it kind of flashes to fully drawn state... would it be
wise to suspend the layout of the form until the data is fully loaded then
resume it and perform a layout? it seems like the layout logic is trying to
run at the same time the data is being loaded... what would you guys
suggest?
