any of you know of a good and easy to use component to access the serial
port?

Simply: use Visual Studio .NET 2005: it has (again) a serial port component.
I used it with the Beta 1, and was really happy with it!

As far as I now, they aren't. But I guess you must find solutions for it on
google.
