Threads and UI

I have a music player class that I start from my main form. The Player Class
fires a PositionChange event every second based on a timer in the class to
notify my application of the play position.

I have added a user control (PlayerControl) displayed on my main form that
allows the user to control the volume, postion, etc. and I want to start a
thread that monitors and interacts with the Player Class and the
PlayerControl to update the postion indicator, raise/lower volume, etc. based
on the user's clicks.

I think I read that one shouldn't interact with the UI from a thread. Would
this be poor programming practice.
