3rd party API call hangs application

I was wondering if there is a way to detect when an api call is hanging and
end it. I am working with a 3rd party API call and it will infrequently hang
when I call it. I am working with the vendor but was curious if anyone knows
if you can catch a hanging API call and kill the process?
