Generic error message when installing MDAC drivers & .NET dependen

I've got a client trying to install the VB.NET program I've written. It
requires MDAC version 2.7 and .NET to run. It installed fine on other
machines in this office, but during the installation process on one PC (Win
XP Pro), after it says it's installed the MDAC drivers, the installation
kicks back an error message reading:

<ERROR MESSAGE>

and shuts down the installation. I've tried installing the MDAC drivers
separately and it seems to reinstall them each time, not detecting that it
already has them. The "error message" isn't helpful in diagnosing the problem.

Any suggestions as to what to try or check next would be appreciated. Many
thanks.

Normally, you don't distribute MDAC with a deployment project. This was
discussed on http://www.gotdotnet.com VB.NET forum a few years ago

Maybe you'll find your answer off of this link:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/data/mdac/default.aspx

Due to project constraints my vb.net application must interface with Access
databases, and in order to do that the users need to have a recent version of
MDAC installed.

The frustrating part is the generic screen when the installer stops that
just reads "<ERROR MESSAGE>". Not much else to go on at this point, and this
is the first comptuer in about 100 that has generated this response to the
installation.
