Where to find good icons?

I'd like references on where to find some good (quality) icons to use for
form and application icons (for the EXE). Most of the free stuff isn't that
great looking and there isn't a good selection. A site offering previews of
icons or purchase of a single icon would be nice.

Thanks,
Brett

Look on www.deviantart.com lots of nice stuff there. Some of it may not be
work friendly so be aware. But they have lots of nice icon sets (imho)

I'd like to download this http://www.deviantart.com/view/16913797/ but it
just brings me to a page ending in ICO. Do you know how to buy or download
icons from the site?

Thanks,

Brett,

Instead of left clicking on the download button, right click it and select
"Save Target As". The file will then download as an icon file (.ico)

For me, I either get a gif, jpeg, or html file depending on what I click.
Using IE6 on WinXP. What are you using that you can right for the ICO
file?

When I click the down arrow, it goes to an ICO page but I can't view source
and the image is a bitmap. Where do you see "download"?

thanks,
brett

Brett,

I am using internet explorer and when I right click on the download link
(the downward facing arrow) the third option down on the context menu says
"Save Target As..." when clicking this I get the standard windows dialogue
box asking where to save the ico file.

If you are getting a gif I suspect you are clicking save picture?

Take a look at the links mentioned on the page referenced below (some of the
icons have been "stolen" from existing applications, so you need to make
sure that using the icon doesn't violate copyright law):

<URL:http://www.activevb.de/rubriken/faq/win-icons.html>

Some free icons:

<URL:http://www.glyfx.com/products.html>

Standard Windows icons are protected by copyright law:

<URL:http://www.microsoft.com/permission/copyrgt/cop-img.htm#Icons>

VS 2005 will come with a bunch of new (Windows XP-style) icons.

In the LIcense, "Commercial redistribution needs my permission" indicates
that you cannot use these icons in your application if you intend to sell
your applicaiton.

A search on Google brings up a plethora of sites.
Not looked at them all myself, but surely amongst them all you should find
what you seek :)

The problem with most free icons is they are just low quality and poorly
designed. Your right, the Google search will bring up a large number of
sites but you'll spend quite a bit of time finding nothing. That's why I
asked if any one had good suggestions. The sites suggested are good and
I'll pay for any icons I use. It probably won't be more than five or so
icons, which will be under a $100 most likely. So very affordable (will
last me a good while) and doesn't require a large investment in time.

Thanks,
Brett

Having spent a lot of time finding nothing and being lucky that most
applications are for internal use only,
we invested in Microangelo and created our own icons.
Something satisfying in seeing your works of art embedded in an application
when installing on a customer's site.

Good luck in your quest for suitable icons.
