DDE server for .NET question

Can somebody please explain what DDE has been replaced by in .NET (in
simplistic terms)?
"remoting"?
A dde custom written server app to listen out for the specific application?

If it is NOT simplistic (eg C calls within win32 libraries) any idea why it
has been made so difficult by MS, except security considerations of .NET?
There seem to be lots of progs that were easily written to pickup variables
from running apps, such as GoldMine. This was incredibly simple.
However now its not possible.
I have seen some samples around like DDElistener but on the whole its too
complex for me. I can only just do VB, let alone any kind of C.
What can be done to access data like DDE? Write your own DDE server or buy
one?

If anyone has any samples that specifically do the listening part for
specific items (as used to be done with the .vblink) I am very grateful..

Many thanks
Tony
