regex pattern question

I have a string that reads "The patient completed <KBD> reps of <KBD> lbs."
that I would like to somehow match against data in a table's field. In the
database, the <KBD> would be replaced by a number or a date or a yes/now.
Is there a way to use regular expressions to "subtract" the first string
from the second, capturing the values that replace the <KBD>?

Thanks,

Craig
