Using threading with a datagrid control

I'm pulling data from a slow data source into a datagrid so I tried to
thread that part of the code. It works fine if only a few records are
returned but I get the following error if it takes longer then a few
seconds.

An unhandled exception of type 'System.NullReferenceException' occurred in
system.windows.forms.dll
Additional information: Object reference not set to an instance of an
object.

Does anyone know why this is happening?
