freferred methods of data access

i've had a few dotnet classes and have been programming for over 14 years so
not really a newbie.
however, i'd like to get some opinions form experienced vb.net programmers
on their preferred ways of loading data onto a form. i am used to passing a
query string to a sql db then loading control values from a recordset. i
see several ways to do the same thing using ado.net so i am looking for some
guidelines as to when to use what. like data adapters and databinding etc.

thanks much,
mcnewsxp
