If only MSDN examples would actually work!

I'm teaching myself threading in VB.NET 2003 and found this article in MSDN:

I have managed to get it to build in VB.NET 2003 but I did have to make a
couple of minor changes before it would run without crashing. Only problem
is I can't see that it's doing anything now that it is running. Anyone into
VB.NET threading who can spot the problem please?

Hmm, just noting the date on the article I'm following and I'm now
suspecting it's just no longer directly applicable to VB.NET 2003.
