Cannot connect to SQL via the PocketPC emulator.

We seem to connect o.k. when we have a network cable plugged into our
workstation. But when the network cable is unconnected we cannot connect to
a SQL server which is on the same laptop as my VS.net. It does however work
in VB.net (non compact framework / emulator). What is required to get the
Pocket PC emulator to connect to a sql server on the same workstation as the
enviornment when not connected to any other network?
