Multimedia in VB .NET

I admit I am more familiar with Delphi programming including the latest
Delphi8 for NET but I thought I would try my luck in VB .NET Beeing a
non-professional self taught programmer I mostly write multimedia tutorial
type code for medical profesionals. This requires graphics and sound/video.
The Delphi language uses a visual component library which amongst other
goodies contain a media player which is really just an object shell for the
windows MCI. Easy to use and yet powerful and fairly full featured but does
not offer low level control. I have scoured the net for info on VB .NET
multimedia and graphics programming but there is so little info so my
question is:
1. Is VB a poor choice of language for this type of programming, i.e is C++
or Delphi just more suitable.
2. Does VB have a simple component for multimedia in the form of a
mediaplayer object and if not how the heck do you code simple sound/video ??
