Strange Idea(con't)

In the last thread (I dont have it anymore) I talked about building a
interface for use by those using this particular newsgroup that would be a
topical search and eliminate garbage and other junk. Well this is a
screenshot of what the program search interface could look like. Any
comments appreciated and welcome especially if you see something you think
should be changed.

I did decide to start over with the messages starting yesterday due to too
many differences becuase I could not figure out a fixed way of defining
topics because of too many variances. Anyone willing to help with this let
me know. I dont think it is a bad thing necessarily as the database will
fill pretty quickly because this is a high volume group.

For now, I am simply going through the messages each day and pulling those I
think are relevant and assigning them to a category or creating a new
category if no category exists. I built an interface to make it as easy as
copy and paste for this.

The topics would load in a arraylist at program load so that the topics
would change as the db changes.

I also had the thought that perhaps I should only give this program to
regular contributors and MVP's as then perhaps they could help in
maintaining the database if I go on vacation or something like that. Again

valuable messages. I tired of Google and others that do not filter the trash
posts or uninformative ones.

As time went on I came to believe that users on the vb.net and ado.net
newsgroups would benefit from this. When I first started vb.net, I would
have killed to have had a tool like this.

The program is completely free though I do have a request that you will see
in the Terms Of Use Menu Item in the search form.

There are not a lot of posts yet but it will grow as time goes on.

contributor to one or both of these newsgroups and well established in your

I think this is a great idea. The issue is ensuring that those who answer
are actually giving good info, and not FUD. Otherwise, you are in the same
boat. You will notice that Aaron Bertrand (a SQL Server MVP) has a neat site
called ASP FAQ that is similar, but he has complete control. Charles Carroll
used to run lists that had moderators to delete the crap.

Theoreticaly it is a good idea.
Practialy - I doubt it it will live.
- people are used to Google and won't bother to download your app.
- too much maintenance (manual insert) - Google is automatic

But hey, I may be wrong.
And such a tool is certainly useful.

It is okay if they do download it or not. This project started out as a tool
for myself. If others benefit great.

Google and other ng search engines don't filter trash and I spend most of my
time when when looking for solutions going through it. I categorize them
according to topic and allow you to search within that topic.

I really don't need people to do any work. Simply to forward me posts that
are "significant". I will do the work of entering them.
