Hi fellows,

May be this is not the general discussion group but
looking at the road map for development tools... please
let me know whether its a good option to buy the visual
studio 2003 when the microsoft is coming up with major new
versions in 2004 and 2005, which will make us upgrade them
again

AFAIK VS.NET 2004 will be released in autumn 2003, that's in about 1
year. Maybe there will be a special upgrade offer too like from 2002 ->
2003.

If you wait for the ultimate you'll wait forever.A better question is - Does what
you have now do the job or are you really needing the features that are in the next
version? If you don't need them desperately, use what you have and upgrade when
you see a distinct advantage in doing so. If you desperately need the new features,
you'll have to wait. But how will you develop in the meantime?

Microsoft nevers makes you upgrade, but they'd sure like you to.

I'm using VS2002. I'll skip 2003 and go straight to 2004 because while there are
a couple of things in 2003 that are handy, there's nothing that I can't live without. But
2004 has some significant changes which will be very useful. I want those. I'll probably
skip 2005, and so on. I'd prefer my employers to remain cutting-edge though. ;-)

Who can tell me from Microsoft ( I am asking as I can see
that u are MVP) whether an upgrade will be there as if I
ask the company to spend on VS 2003 and later I dont want
to be in a bad spot when the 2004 is released and we have
to buy the whole product again.

What I read in the Road map is that they are particularly
reducing the coding part for developers.

Why cant Microsoft stabalise their product rather than
major changes every year..

Another consideration...

Depending on the version of VS.NET you want, Standard. Pro, Enterprise
Developer, or Enterprise Architect, the cost may just justify the purchase
of an MSDN subscription.

For example; the cost of VS.NET 2003 Enterprise Architect is (roughly)
$2500USD and the subscription for MSDN Universal is $2800USD with a rebate
of $300USD if you select the DVD option bringing the cost to $2500USD.

For 1 year you get updates and new version of everything.

I don't think that it's possible to tell that at this moment. I am not
a Microsoft employee, I don't have any information on that.

I worked with the Whidbey Alpha version and IMHO it was much better than
the previous versions...

I didn't get the MSDN version, but I took part in the Alpha program.

It depends on how critical it is in your workload.
Better buy now because if the .Net comes out of the new
version next year all you have to do is install the
upgrade patch you don't have to buy the entire .NET
package.
