how do I check for permissions on a directory?

I just want to know if the person logged in to the box has read
permission or write permission on a network directory. How do I do
this?

one way would be to put the read and write in try-catch statements

try
'read from directory
catch
'can't so therefore assume no read access
end try

try
'write to directory
catch
'can't so therefroe assume no write access
end try
