Serialized XML as Crystal Datasource

P: n/a
I use a custom class to hold several other custom classes
(some are collections). Each child class has properties,
methods, etc. In some of these methods, I need to use
particular information from the parent class, such as its
ID.

Here's my problem. When I serialize the parent class,
all is fine and the child classes make reference to it
very nicely. However, when I try to specify the
serialized xml file as a datasource in Crystal Reports, I
am advised that a nested reference is illegal.

1) Am I wrong to create a reference from a child class to
its parent? If so, what is the recommended means of
getting to parent properties?

2) Does anyone have any tips for using a serialized XML
file representing custom classes as a datasource for
Crystal Reports?

3) Somewhat unrelated to this topic: is there a way to
format the serialized xml to be more easily readable (ie.
indentation)?

I know this is a lot for a single post, but I really
appreciate any help. I've posted a previous message that
asked about advanced class structures and such but it got
no response. If anyone has seen a good book or reference
on how to implement "best practises" for custom class
design, please let me know.
