How to network between two computer only with a cable

i'm javascript programmer and i want to create network between an pc and a laptop only with a cable , my os on the both computer is ubuntu 9.4

one of the computer is in the ethernet network ,
i want to disconnect this computer from network and connect my computer to the that with a cable
do i need an special permission for doing this work?

how can i do this work?
i dont know about network concept anything, would you please describe with details

Why are you doing this?

If both computers are on the same network, there should be no difficulty in communications.

Otherwise, if you want to use Ethernet, you'll probably need a special "cross-over" cable. Not all adapters auto-switch on the signal wires, so you're best off doing things the "right" way.

With USB, I have no clue how you'd go about it, though.

Once the physical connection is made, and you can see the link light on the adapters, you can configure the Ehternet ports on one or both computers. Are you familiar with this process?
