Setting up Xubuntu/Ubuntu 9.10 + Grub/Grub2 on a Windows XP Dell with RAID 0

Here is my situation:

- My windows install/apps/games were eaten by a virus that replicates into and
wrecks .exe files

- I made an Ubuntu 9.10 CD on my friends pc, and a Xubuntu 9.10 DVD on this PC while running the Ubuntu one.

- Both Linux Disks give a grub failed to install error at 95%

- I have a RAID 0 array

- Thanks to the incomplete install my PC has the original XP partitions, but also a root, swap, home, boot and user in an extended partition for Linux.

- I want to use Xubuntu as the wireless adapter tends not to work but instead
continuously tries to connect (Netgear WG111v3)

- The sound doesn't work in Ubuntu, only Xubuntu, and it worked once but in
mono which is useless for music.

What I want to do:

- Install Xubuntu as an extra OS on my PC
- Remove the virus while running Xubuntu
- Download a Windows XP Pro installation CD (I have the key still, lost the
CD)
- Reinstall Windows

I would use Xubuntu full time, but my game won't run then, and I can't use Autodesk Maya for college.

If anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Grub is the bootloader, the little program that loads your OS (in case you didn't know). So if only Grub failed to install, your Linux installation should be fine, just inaccessible.
I assume there's a way to install grub from a live-cd (or live-usb flash drive for that matter), but I'm afraid I can't immediately help you on that one.
Google probably can though.

You can also check the Grub home page. I had it happen after an installation of Gentoo, where Grub didn't install. It took logting in to single user mode and having to emerge the grub package and everything. I am sure there is plenty of information on Google as well, as Yarr suggested already.

This usually happens when using mixed (scsi + ide etc) storage setup. See this.
Alternatively, as yarr said, only GRUB is not installed on your system. So, either you can manually install GRUB from some linux live CD or use Auto SuperGRUBDisk or use someother bootmanager like GAG.

And if you get this to setup, you can then use ClamAV to remove malicious files from Windows installation.

About trying to connect to internet, you may need to do some configurations after you are done with GRUB problem. And yeah, iirc sound doesnot works under ubuntu directly. You need to download gstreamer etc (codecs?) to play MP3 etc on *ubuntu.
