you might try the windows client with WINE for linux ... there are a lot of results/guides for that when you 'google' this ...

The warning is understood, but I would argue unwarranted. The user made a request of which I have a perfectly valid solution. Nothing about spam on this.

I am new to the Bytes IT community, and look forward to what kind of resource it ends up being. I understand you will want a clean, no-nonsense forum where answers are not watered down with unwanted garbage, and will keep my posts held to the same standard.

Agreed, it was a tough call, but please understand that while your intentions were good the vast majority of similar posts are always from spammers.
Look at it from my angle, a new user (red flag), posts a link as their first post (red flag), admittedly on topic (clever spammers do this but it can go either way so this is a red/green flag) but without much more content than that (red flag).

In truth the things that prevented me from banning you outright was the fact that the post was on topic, you used a identifiable username and signed your post. All of those things, specifically the last two, are not hallmarks of a normal spammer, therefore I gave pause and decided to initiate a dialog instead of whipping out my ban hammer. In this case you proved to be genuine instead of just a really clever spammer. However on second thought you could still be a very, very clever spammer, time will tell ;-)

Anyway, thank you for your understanding, I hope you do decide to participate and find that our community will be a useful resource for you in the future.

Also to the original poster, I recommend switching to subversion without delay. Using VSS will not benefit your project moving into the future. If you plan on having multiple files or developers in different parts of the globe VSS will only hinder your success.

just to combine a bit more information i link another thread of the OP here. so basicly it seems that they use VSS already ... and now he/she wants to check in/out to the existing repository from a linux-machine ... while i certainly would recommend the use of subversion or cvs i could clearly understand that a switch to that wouldn't be that easy ... since he/she just seems to be the first developer who wants to do that ... so in case its a company it appears the only reason for switching the version-control would be one guy with a linux-machine? so they might think why should we drop the good old working VSS? there are a lot of reasons to do so - some are mentioned already .... but it could be that the OP needs to use the VSS without having a chance to do not. So i think trying the WINE-solution or searching for an eclipse-plugin might be the best bet in such a case ... but in case the version-control-system could be really replaced ... then i'm with all of you: change it :)

I was about to post, but you succinctly posted my thoughts as well.

However, in regards to spammers, I'm getting tired of this accusation. There are some developers (like myself) who actually work for software companies that have solutions to people's problems.

So, when perusing around for personal projects, reading up on new technologies, or finding a new community forum, and I see a problem in which I directly wrote code to fix that problem, I have no issues mentioning something like SourceOffSite. I hope tvnaidu gives it a try, and posts back that it solved his problems, and we can consider this a closed issue.

Jeff, we don't think you are a spammer. So far you have not shown any hallmarks of being one except for your very first post and even then the evidence for accusing you of being a spammer was marginal at best.

I choose to err on the side guilty until proven innocent when it comes to spammers. If that means that from time to time someone is wrongly accused then so be it (so far, in all my years here, you have been first person who did not turn out to be some form of spammer or viral marketer).

Okay, now we can all let the matter rest, no harm has been done so no foul will be called.

Also you should know, that most of us work for software companies that have solutions available for purchase. Everyone has plugged their own product from time to time, that is acceptable on this forum. So, no worries, k?

Since there has been some questions about your original post, let me go over my 1st post in a bit more detail. Note, there may be other solutions available, but this is one in which I have intimate knowledge.

SourceOffSite is a third party tool to access a Visual SourceSafe database from Windows and non-Windows clients. SourceOffSite (SOS) has two components. The first is a SOS server which is a Windows based service that resides on the same network (or machine) as your VSS database. A VSS client must also be installed as it provides an API which allows SOS to interact with VSS data.

The second component is a client to access the SOS Server. This client lets you perform almost all VSS operations within the VSS database: check-out, check-in, label, move, rename, etc. There are clients for Windows (with a revamped GUI) and other Windows based IDEs (http://www.sourcegear.com/sos/downloads.html). And there are clients for Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Solaris and OS X - (http://www.sourcegear.com/sos/downloads2.html) These clients come in a GTK based client as well as a command line client.

tvnaidu, I would think the Fedora client would work in your case, but if not, a mention of this to Technical Support will get you the source to build your own client as long as you can install all the dependencies.

Finally, SOS comes with a 30 day free demo, so feel free to give it a try. Let me know if this solves your problem.

I know it sounds crazy, but at SourceGear we encounter customers with this setup all the time.

I think a lot of people still want to leverage legacy code which may be residing in a VSS repository, but still need access to it within a non-windows environment.

I think I've seen something from CollabNet or a project on SourceForge which may do this. Not to start a flamewar, but what's even better are the questions we get asking us to convert svn to Vault or even better yet, svn to TeamSystem.

svn to teamsystem I can understand. If you are comfortable with the Microsoft ecosystem and would like to use their products, then go for it. But not even Microsoft is supporting VSS anymore. They abandon it in favor of TeamSystem which is more like a clone of svn anyway.

A really innovative SCM is Git which I've never really used, and bzr which is I think used exclusively by Cannonical.

So to the OP: switch to something else, anything else! I beg you! Zipping up your code base and sending it via email to everyone is superior to VSS. Manually tracking it on a whiteboard is superior. However my opinion may be biased so take it for what it is worth.

This is not exactly true. As things stand right now, VSS is on "end of life" with support to expire mid-2011. But then again, MS has also been trying the same thing with Visual Basic. We'll see how this plays out.
