Since the file type in Linux is not defined by the file extension (i.e. the very same script could be called virus.sh, virus.exe, virus.jpg, virus, ...), the file extension will not help you very much indentifying a virus on a Linux system.

Have a look into the man page of the 'file' command, this may be helpful.

As previously stated, Linux uses "magic numbers" and mime types to determine the file contents rather than the archaic extension type. In fact, extensions aren't even necessary in Linux. I trust you are interested in this from a security auditing standpoint, right?
