This sure ain't HTML.

Hey, my name is Dante. I am 15, and I managed to teach myself HTML when I was 13. I've tried to move onto PHP, but I put er in reverse and decided to do CSS first.

Unix isn't proving to be very to easy to learn on your own. I was wondering if you guys new of any good learning resources for the.. extreme noobie. I don't even know where to start. There's like.. Solaris, and Linux, whatever that is! Ahh, I need some help here, i'm feeling a bit beat up on, and i'm on the verge of quitting!

I'd get a tutor if I wasn't broke!

Oh, I forgot. I'm running on an Intel-Based macbook pro. I think this program called Terminal has something to do with what i'm attempting.. but it's.. Bash? Whatever that means.

Haha, yeah, Linux has a pretty steep learning curve. It's only recently been offset by the GUIs becoming more easy to use, but there's still a lot of functionality you can do with the command line that just doesn't translate the same into a GUI tool yet.

If you look around, you can probably find somewhere that will give you a Unix account. They used to be pretty popular, but have faded a bit. If you can't use Putty to connect to someone remotely, then you can either dual-boot, and install Linux on your harddrive, or install something like Cygwin (though I'm not sure if they have it for Macs, you'd have to google it and find out).

I'd recommend installing it as your main operating system on a spare piece of hardware, as that really is the best way to learn (personal opinion there). And then from there, read documentation, read documentation, use the 'man' keywords, read the documentation, install fun programs you find, read the documentation, install/setup a server, and did I mention read the documentation?

Your Mac is actually built on BSD, which is very Unix-like (if you will permit me to say so). On your Mac, fire up the terminal app. This is a shell emulator like on Linux, IRIX, BSD, etc. Here you can enter commands as you would on a Unix box without the hassle of dual booting. I do, however, agree with Snake in that using any of the Unix derivatives as your primary system is the best way to learn. Just remember, "man" is your friend in Unix.

Here are some starter commands for you to research (all of which will work with your Mac's terminal app):
man
cat
cp
mv
rm
cd
pwd
top
more
ls -l
which

(I think the following will work on the Mac, but I'm not 100% sure):
locate
apropos
sh

Also, I think it's great that you're willing to learn Unix (and other cool toys) at your age.
