datatype smalldatetime now requrement is there to store nil

i hav a vb project with sql server as back end.it has a field called dateoforder of datatype smalldatetime now requrement is there to store nil if date of order is not given in register. kindly suggest me how to implement that

Nil is called NULL in SQL Server, I think.
