Splitting a field into two

I have a field that contains codes like

fhj#asds
kjjljlj#12
And so on.

What I want to do is create two new fields (field1 and filed2) that
split the original filed at '#'
If a field does not contain '#' I would like its entire contents to be
saved in field1.

Also how do I ensure that I save these changes?

Thanks fo any help in advance.
Regards,
Ciarán

UPDATE YourTable SET
col1 = LEFT(colx, CHARINDEX('#',colx+'#')-1),
col2 = SUBSTRING(colx, CHARINDEX('#',colx+'#')+1,100)

Where 100 = the maximum length of your column.

David,

That worked perfectly.
Thanks
