Indexing Low Cardinality columns in a data warehouse scenario

Tim
Folks,

It seems that SQL Server 2005 does not yet support explicitly defined
Bitmap indexes?
Mention is made in the documentation that SSAS utilizes them
implicitly.
However I have a requirement to facilitate speedy response via SQL
access rather than via a cube and OLAP.

In a data warehouse scenario with a customer dimension projected to be
about 5 million rows what is the considered opinion of the panel as to
the best way to support efficent and speedy searches on a low
cardinality column such as gender, age range, geographical region and
so forth?

TIA, Tim
