I guess SQL server does not release claimed memory even if it is not
used. Is there anyway to free the unused memory?
Run another application that eats memory and SQL Server will yield.
You can also configure how much memory SQL Server will use from
Enterprise Manager.
Normally, you should let SQL Server gets the memory it wants, because
more memory means bigger cache, and bigger cache means better response
times. But if SQL Server is not alone on the machine, you may have to
compromise.
