SQL use statistics

Anybody know how many companies worldwide use SQL server and how many
individual servers this amounts to? Also, at what rate is SQL use
growing? Can someone at least point me to a source where I could find
close to exact numbers?

I'd be interested if you find a "reliable source"
or indeed if you published your findings.

Best wishes,

Gartner publishes some stuff on Market share. Here's one article and the
link at the bottom of the page will take you to some other reports (which
you have to pay for).

http://www.gartner.com/DisplayDocument?doc_cd=115036

For figures on number of customers and installations you might find
something on the DB vendors' websites.
