SQL Server Browser service?

aj
SQL Server 2005 SP2

What exactly is the purpose of the SQL Server Browser service?
On the Services dialog, its description is:
"Provides SQL Server connection information to client computers."

So I thought turning it off would cause that particular SQL Server
to not be advertised on the network when someone does a "Browse for
More" in Mgmt Studio and looks at the network servers tab.

This is apparently not the case, tho.. The server still appeared.

What does the service do? Why would I turn it off?

TIA
