xp_sqlmaint

Can the only thing you do is delete backup files with xp_sqlmaint, or
do you also have to backup the database?

As documented in Books Online, xp_sqlmaint is effectively a wrapper
for sqlmaint.exe, so you can use it to backup databases if you want
(see "sqlmaint Utility" for details).

It's commonly used through the Maintenance Plan Wizard, which
generates scheduled jobs to execute xp_sqlmaint. Is there something
specific you're trying to achieve?
