Best disk config for SQL 2005

I am designing a new db server and have some questions. I am a UNIX guy so please be gentle :)

App: 500G data 3000+ tables 90/10 read/write (currently on AIX/DB2)

Hardware:
Dell 2950 2xquad core 32G ram 2x146G internal drives raid 1 for the OS and SQL install
2 MD1000 shelves 15 146G 15K drives with 1 dedicated to hot spare each
1 SAS controller (the next box could have 2)

4 disks raid 10 for logs
4 disks raid 10 for temp db
20 disks for data

I wanted to create a 20 disk raid 10 for data but the controller only supports 16 disks in that config.
Right now I have it built with raid 50 (raid 5 on each shelf and raid 0 across) within the controller. This presents 1 lun to the OS.

Some folks in my org don't like Windows software raid. My experience with it in UNIX is good and my limited Windows exposure has been good as well. I haven't found any real evidence not to trust it. Opinions welcome.

Here is what I would like to do:
2 or 4 raid 10s across both shelves. Raid 0 in the OS. If I get 2 controllers in the next (production) box, I don't think I will be able to get around software raid anyway.

I read somewhere that MSSQL can work with multiple volumes, essentially raiding at the db level. Is this true? Is it a good thing?

Conventional wisdom also states that more luns are better than fewer and this has been born out in my UNIX experience. Is the same true in the Windows world? This would lead toward the 4 raid 10 solution or even 10 raid 1s but I think that is a bit much and not worth the clutter.
