union in trigger

my turn to ask the question...i have a trigger it's very basic...

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. INSTEAD OF UPDATE
  2. ...
  3. ...
  4. ...
  5. insert into mytable (field1, field2)
  6.     select field1, field2 from inserted where isnumeric(field2) = 1 union
  7.     select field1, field3 from inserted where isnumeric(field3) = 1 
  8.  

it's not allowing me to use UNION. is it even possible?

and avoid the UNION'ism :)
