Searching and matching string field

I have a 'Names' field in a table which has names with initials like 'T S Rxxx', 'T.S.Rxxxx', 'TS Rxxx'.
But if the user types 'T S R' or 'T.S.R' in search box, the result should show all these names.
In another words, how to replace fullstops & spaces in names field and compare them with the search word which I can cleanup using ASP's Replace property?
Basic Query:
"select names from table where names like '%cleanedupstring%' "
Any way I can use find & replace here for dots & spaces?
I do not want to compare each & every name as my table has more than 5000 rows.
